From replacing old, black fillings, to dark lines around old caps and crowns to chipped, crooked, or worn-down looking teeth. As our society continues to add more value to first impressions, people are flocking to get makeovers and a lot of men and women from right here in the Las Cruces-El Paso area are starting with their smile.

I graduated from New Mexico State University in 1985 with my Bachelor’s in Biology and then I went to University of Colorado School of Dentistry in Denver and that is where I got my graduate degree in dentistry. Right after that, I became very interested in pursuing more education, especially in cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry, so I did quite a bit of extra study in Las Vegas, Nevada and also in Baylor in Texas and at that point I decided to pursue what we call accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. It is basically a program that takes two to three years, involving lots of study, treatment of real patients, before and after pictures, lots of photos to show that we know the concepts of cosmetic dentistry. Not only just how to do the technical procedures themselves but also things like smile design, making it look so natural that you do not even notice. It looks so real and so in 1996 I was able to complete my accreditation with the Academy and received my accreditation which I am very proud of and really since that time, really it was not the end of something, it was the beginning of a learning process. I began to learn more and more. As I learned, I had opportunities to teach at some postgraduate dental education courses, including in Las Vegas and also with a group called Aesthetic Advantage out of Manhattan, New York, which has been a exciting experience learning many things there. Now, one of the newest opportunities that I have is, I have the opportunity to be an examiner with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and what that means is, people who are applying to become accredited or going through that same process, I went through a number of years ago, I actually review their work, evaluate if they can make the right choices in cosmetic dentistry, use the right materials, and have that smile design concept as well and that has been also very rewarding. I have learned many things from that.

If people are looking for a dentist and for a dentist who can do cosmetic changes, because I think those are two distinct things. I am so impressed with Dr. Gilbert. I am impressed with him and his professionalism. I am impressed with his staff and their level of professionalism. The organization is just outstanding. The technology is outstanding.

When I started doing my research and seeing the credentials that Dr. Gilbert had, it became very obvious that he was a leader in his field. He is not just a dentist that he is a teacher.

He cares about you and he is interested in what you want, what you need, and he will give you options.

He is so like down-to-earth and friendly and up-to-date.

In dental school, typically we are taught things like silver fillings, what we call porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, those kind of crowns you have seen that act like a black line at the gumline someone’s mouth you see a dark area. That is what I would call traditional restorative dentistry. The dark line on a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is really an area where, one of two things. It can either be where actually some metal is joined, if the porcelain does not go all the way down past the metal near the gumline. The other thing is even in cases where the porcelain goes all the way and covers the metal, the metal actually blocks light from entering the tooth. A tooth is like a prism. Light travels through it like a crystal. When you put a piece of metal over and block that light, the tooth becomes dark and sometimes you will see in the person’s mouth, it even seems like the gum tissue looks dark. That is actually the root surface not shining light through. So, when we place an all-porcelain crown or porcelain veneer, it is another example, light travels through the porcelain and in to the tooth, it shines, it reflects light. It shines through the root, just like a natural tooth. It looks completely natural.

I had a couple of crowns done at another dentist several years ago before I came to

Dr. Gilbert and they left these dark lines down at the base of the gum. My smile before was very dark. It was very discolored. I had a tendency not to smile as much as I wanted to because I was very self-conscious about it. And after dinner one evening, we took some pictures and I had those pictures developed and I saw how dark my teeth were. I had just finally made the decision. I had been thinking about it and I finally made the decision to come in to Brian and see what he could do. I remember walking in to the bathroom and looking at them and I think I cried a little bit. From what I remember, I am still almost crying now, thinking about it. It was just such a difference. I was just really excited. I think I smiled all the way home.
